I'm on a mailing list with a group of professional women designers and developers. There's lots of conversation flowing and it occasionally turns very lively - as it did recently when a member posted about her frustration with CSS and continuing attachment to tables. It ignited a veritable firestorm of commentary! It was fun to read, but it did help me clarify a few reasons that I love CSS and think it's worth the time of any web professional to learn it. Note I didn't say 'master' it, because I don’t think there are a whole lot of people that can do that, but learning? That's one of the reasons I'm in this profession, because I like to be challenged.

Cascading Style Sheets, otherwise known as CSS, are a method of styling virtually any element found in a website. They allow web developers to style and format web pages to precision using a standard format that is recognised by the W3C. CSS is literally just like an onion in that it allows designers to layer styles upon one another to form a complete styling definition for the entire site.

Cascading Style Sheet ('CSS') is a technique used to define styles in HTML for elements being displayed on a web page. You may use separately font, color, etc tags to define how information will look like but it is always recommended to use CSS for such things. Before we discuss the benefits of using CSS lets first know types of CSS, there are two types of CSS inline and external.

Safari is one of those tricky browsers that aren't the most cooperative but there aren't many hacks for it that will work. Unlike IE that allows you to target the browser directly easily, Safari doesn't offer that solution within XHTML. I could only come up with 2 ways to use CSS hacks or tricks for Safari specifically.

Many small business owners have a hard time seeing the value of a website redesign. They believe "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." And this is understandable. Unless you are eating, breathing and sleeping technology and staying up to date with the moving target of Internet business, you're not likely to know intuitively if your site needs a redesign.

And as a small business owner, you may be concerned about the up-front costs of a website redesign. But once you understand how a redesign can help you drive traffic to your site, convert more users and even save money, you'll feel more positive about making the investment in your business.

Yes, you need to know about CSS, even if you plan on having a pro design your website.

Why? First good reason:

It costs you much less to have changes at your website done if you use CSS instead of font tags.
